Diaper Drive is On!

Monday, October 06, 2008

The Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce 2008 Leadership Boerne Class is coordinating a Diaper Drive during the month of October, 2008 to benefit Hill Country Daily Bread MinistriesView flyer.

Families with babies and toddlers spend an average $919 for the 1,800 – 2,800 disposable diapers they use for one baby in the first year and approximately $1600 for the diapers they’ll use until the baby is toilet-trained at about 2 ½ years old. And that is just the cost of diapers. Wipes and diaper rash ointment add to the financial expenses a family with children incurs. In fact, it is estimated that the non-medical expenses for maintaining a baby in its first year can easily run between $9,000 and $11,000 for diapers, food, furniture, clothing, formula and other necessities.

Did you know that diapers, wipes and diaper rash ointments are not eligible products to be purchased through WIC or the Food Stamp Programs? For many families in Kendall County and across America, choices have to be made between purchasing food or buying diapers and wipes.

Diaper Rash continues to be one of the top five reasons that families are reported to Child Protective Services, resulting in even more stress for families who are already dealing with simply trying to survive.

Leadership Boerne, a flagship program of the Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce, continues to bring together emerging community and business leaders to encourage them to serve their community. The 2008 Graduating Class was deeply touched by the mission of the Hill Country Daily Bread Ministries who made a presentation to one of their classes. This ministry helps more than 700 families in the Texas Hill Country and what they say they really need are diapers, wipes and diaper rash ointment. The situation is desperate and the Class of 2008 is serious.
